This price and market structure story follows LNG capable vessels as they move from orderbooks into routine port use. Kpler says Barcelona recorded 822 calls by LNG powered vessels in 2024, close to one in ten vessel calls, compared with 618 in 2023.
The port supplied 229,751 cubic metres of LNG in 2024, up 60.5 percent from 2023. Barge deliveries accounted for 184,324 cubic metres, while tanker trucks supplied 45,427 cubic metres.
The fleet mix widened beyond cruise and ferry traffic. Five car carriers bunkered LNG across ten operations, while container services included the 400 metre CMA CGM Palais Royal.
The figures matter because technical capability does not prove actual fuel use. Kpler found that actual LNG demand across more than 500 dual fuel vessels during 2024 and 2025 was about 35 percent of theoretical potential, leaving deployment dependent on price, fuel availability, contracts and voyage economics.
