The latest discovery in Brazil's Equatorial Margin came as Petrobras drilled deeper targets at the Morpho exploration well off Amapá.[14] The company found another interval containing oil after announcing an initial discovery in August, extending its evaluation of the prospect rather than declaring a producing field.[14]
Morpho lies in block FZA-M-59 in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, in water 2,886 metres deep.[16] Petrobras identified the new interval through electrical well logs, rock indications and fluid samples collected during drilling.[14]
Laboratory work on the latest samples remains underway, and Petrobras plans to combine those findings with the data gathered during drilling.[14] Tests on the oil found in August have confirmed its good quality, according to the company, but that result should not be read as a completed assessment of the new interval.[14]
Petrobras plans to finish drilling and evaluate the formations before determining the discoveries' commercial significance.[14] The additional geological evidence supports its effort to assess frontier resources and replenish reserves, but the latest find is not a declaration of commercial reserves or confirmation of recoverable volumes.[14]
