LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solutions have been selected as the preferred bidders to supply and install the submarine cables for the Haesong offshore wind farm, the largest offshore wind development under construction in South Korea. The duo will handle the full scope, from cable design through manufacturing and offshore installation.
Haesong sits in the waters near Heuksando and is structured as two 504MW projects for a combined 1,008MW. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is leading investment and overall project management, with its developer arm Copenhagen Offshore Partners handling licensing and technical development on the ground in Korea.
The award builds on a deepening relationship between LS Cable and CIP. The Korean cable maker has previously delivered or been picked for the Changfang Xidao and Zhong Neng wind farms in Taiwan, the Jeonnam 1 project in Korea, and more recently the Fengmiao project in Taiwan and the Taean project at home.
Kwon Ji an, head of the supply chain strategy team and managing director of the Haesong Offshore Wind Power Co., called the agreement an important milestone for localising the offshore wind industry and stabilising the supply chain. Cable supply has been one of the tightest bottlenecks in the global offshore wind market for the last two years.
For Korea, Haesong is a flagship test of whether large scale fixed bottom offshore wind can move from permitting into construction at gigawatt scale. Securing a domestic cable manufacturer for a project of this size also reduces exposure to the European and Chinese cable yards that currently dominate global supply.
