Danish Utility Seeks New Partner as TotalEnergies Exits Lillebælt Syd Offshore Wind Project

This story falls in Bucket B, licensing, mergers and portfolio moves, as TotalEnergies leaves the 165 MW Lillebælt Syd offshore wind project in Denmark. Danish utility SONFOR will take over the majority stake in Lillebælt Vind A/S and look for a new partner. SONFOR plans to finish its review of prospective partners and the business case by the end of June 2027.

European Energy, which joined the project in 2022, will remain a minority shareholder. TotalEnergies entered in 2024 and had held the majority interest. Danish media also report that TotalEnergies is leaving the Jammerland Bugt offshore wind project, where European Energy is also a minority shareholder.

Plans for Lillebælt Syd call for eleven 15 MW turbines, giving the project 165 MW of capacity and expected annual generation of about 650 GWh. The development has completed environmental investigations, received an establishment permit and secured a grid connection agreement. Operations are currently planned to begin in 2029 or 2030.

SONFOR said offshore wind market conditions have changed significantly and that its review will test the commercial case alongside the search for a partner. The change adds ownership and financing uncertainty even though key permits and grid arrangements are in place. For Denmark’s offshore wind sector, the decision shows how developers are continuing to reassess smaller projects as costs and investment priorities shift.
