China’s NewNew Shipping Line Pushes Deeper Into Arctic With First Murmansk Container Run

This story falls in the regional shifts bucket, as NewNew Shipping Line expands the role of Chinese container operators in Arctic trade. Its 29,000 dwt Xin Xin Hai 1 arrived in Murmansk on August 19 after a roughly one month voyage from Tianjin with automotive components. The cargo of about 500 containers was the first Asian container shipment to reach the Russian port through the Northern Sea Route.

NewNew completed seven Arctic voyages in 2023, then 13 in 2024 and another 13 in 2025. Its Arctic Express No. 1 service carried about 17,500 TEUs on seven export and seven import voyages during 2024 and 2025. The company is targeting as many as 12 voyages between China and Arkhangelsk in 2026.

The company is considering investments in Murmansk and Arkhangelsk ports and in inland logistics facilities. Russian officials have said NewNew could invest as much as 200 billion rubles, or $2.5 billion, in a planned deepwater expansion at Arkhangelsk. NewNew also plans to introduce larger 4,800 TEU ice class ships later this year, although the status of both the vessels and port investment remains unclear.

Other Asian operators are testing the route as well. South Korean carrier PanStar scheduled its first commercial container trial from Busan to Europe for August 22, while India is planning a pilot cargo voyage in 2027. The volumes remain small by global shipping standards, but NewNew is targeting 1.2 million tonnes on the route in 2027 as it treats the Arctic as a seasonal commercial corridor.
